Vishay Buying Checklist: The Best Way to Order Sfernice, IGBTs, and Passives

This checklist doesn't fix lead times. It helps you get the right part in motion, fast, and with fewer surprises.

This step is super annoying, but it saves you a ton of time later.

Step 2: Check the Lifecycle Status Before You Fall in Love

Not all Vishay parts are actively manufactured. Some older Sfernice trimmers or IGBT modules become 'not recommended for new designs' quietly. I learned that the hard way in 2023 when a supposedly in-stock part was actually an obsolete cross-reference.

The fix: check the product page for lifecycle status. If it says 'Last Time Buy' and you don't need lots, reconsider. If it's 'Active', you're fine.

I understand the hesitation around rush fees. But here's the thing: the rush fee buys certainty, not just speed. In March 2024, I paid an extra $400 for guaranteed expedited shipping on a batch of IGBT modules. The alternative was potentially missing a $15,000 prototype demonstration. Was I nervous? Yes. But the quote included a specific delivery date, and they hit it. So glad I didn't cheap out.

We didn't have a formal approval chain for rush fees at that point. We paid the invoice, and then I had to explain the $400 premium to finance. That part wasn't fun. But the demonstration went out on time, which made it easier to defend.

My advice: whenever you're dealing with a schedule risk, get a documented delivery commitment. If you're only comparing unit price, you're ignoring the actual cost of being late.

Step 5: Verify Cross-References Without Calling Them 'Drop-Ins'

Sometimes a Vishay part has an equivalent from another manufacturer. That's fine. But if you've been asked to buy 'Vishay Sfernice' specifically, there's usually a reason. During our 2024 consolidation, we tested three brand options for a custom application. The surprise wasn't the price difference. It was how much hidden value came with the 'expensive' option—engineering support, detailed datasheets, and tolerance stability that mattered in real-world tests.

Step 6: Build a Reorder Checklist (Yes, Even for Infrequent Orders)

  • Lifecycle status confirmed.

One more thing—we didn't have a formal approval chain for rush orders at first. It cost us an unauthorized rush fee once. So add 'rush approval' to your checklist. You won't need it often, but when you do, it'll keep you from eating the charge.

Common Mistakes I Still See

Here are the usual pain points, in no particular order:

  • Skipping the current datasheet and reusing a part number from an old BOM. 'It worked last time' is not a procurement strategy.
  • Ignoring the difference between reel and cut-tape packaging. Kitting depends on it.
  • Assuming IGBT modules have same lead times as passives. They don't. In early 2025, IGBT lead times we've been quoted range from 20 to 40 weeks for some module families (based on our distributor quotes, January 2025; verify current availability). Plan ahead.
  • Forgetting to include freight and tariffs in the 'best price' comparison. A $0.50 savings per unit disappears when you divide by the $80 add-on freight fee.

Also, if a vendor tells you 'in stock' in an email but doesn't provide a ships-on date, that's a yellow flag. In my experience, a real shipment date is the only fact you can plan around.

The checklist isn't glamorous. It doesn't make your company's products any more exciting. But it does mean that next time someone says 'just order the N93', you'll know to ask for the full part number, check the datasheet, pin the lead time, and get it on the books. To me, that's the best way to handle Vishay orders—or any component orders, really.

Take this with a grain of salt: every buying situation is a little different. But if you're tired of last-minute surprises and budget overruns, a simple checklist is probably the highest-leverage fix you can make this quarter.
