If you’ve spent any time looking at component registries, you’ve probably noticed that Vishay isn’t one clean search result. You’ll see Vishay Intertechnology Asia, Vishay Israel Ltd, and an address that makes people search for “De Soto, KS” at 11 pm. Then you’ll see a much simpler question from someone learning the trade: what are connectors used for?
I’m a procurement manager at a 180-person electronics manufacturer. I’ve managed our component budget for 7 years—over $2M annually at its peak—and I’ve documented thousands of purchase orders. This article is a comparison between two sourcing strategies I keep going back and forth on: consolidating on Vishay as the anchor supplier, or using many specialized vendors. The conclusion surprised me.
Why This Comparison Is Worth Doing
The question isn’t “Is Vishay good?” It’s “Is one broad-line supplier better for your total cost than a portfolio of specialists?”
I compare the two approaches on five dimensions: unit price, hidden cost, engineering support, connector complexity, and supply continuity. Why those five? Because after 6 years of tracking corrective actions, I can trace every sourcing mistake in our system to one of them.
Unit Price Is Not the Number I Trust
When I get a quote, I ignore the unit price at first. That sounds backwards for a cost controller, but it’s the only way to avoid getting fooled.
Last year, we compared 48 SKUs on a new product. The multi-vendor routes had lower line-item prices. But once we added freight, minimum order charges, inspection time, and the cost of entering three purchase orders instead of one, the multi-vendor basket was 4.7% more expensive. The savings were in someone else’s spreadsheet, not ours.
Short version: cheap line items can create expensive BOMs. That’s one reason I still like a Vishay-anchored distribution lane for common passives.
Hidden Cost: The Quote Is Not the Contract
I learned this from a bad assumption. I assumed that “same specifications” on a resistor meant the same behavior in every vendor’s part. It didn’t. A difference in long-term stability showed up only after 300 hours of temperature cycling.
That’s why I pay attention to the legal entity behind a component. When a precision resistor trace comes back to Vishay Israel Ltd, the documentation is easier to trust. It doesn’t mean every lot is perfect. It means there’s a real manufacturing entity with a datasheet, a change-notification process, and a support chain. For a part that has to hold a voltage divider ratio for 10 years, that’s worth something.

Every few months, a new buyer asks me: what are connectors used for? The easy answer is “to connect things.” But that’s not enough information to make a buying decision.
A connector has four jobs:
- Electrical: keep contact resistance stable at the rated current.
- Mechanical: hold the two halves together under shock, vibration, and cable pull.
- Signal integrity: preserve impedance and keep noise from crossing the boundary.
- Serviceability: allow a board to be assembled, tested, repaired, or upgraded without rework.
One project that made this concrete was a transparent “clear phone” concept we quoted. It never launched, but it forced us to think about every visible component. The connector had to work electrically, and it also had to look intentional. That’s when I stopped treating connectors as an afterthought.
Connectors Are the Easy Place to Lose the Savings
Here’s where the comparison gets counterintuitive. Vishay makes a wide range of passives: foil resistors, SMD resistors, capacitors, inductors, diodes, MOSFETs, optoelectronics, and sensors. It does not make every connector I need. So should I multi-source connectors? In many cases, yes.
For standard connectors, an authorized distributor can bundle them with the passive BOM and keep your P.O. count down. For specialty connectors—RF, high-power, waterproof, custom latch designs—a specialist supplier is usually worth the extra administrative cost. I found that the hard way when a cheap connector failed during vibration testing and turned into a $1,200 redo.
For acceptance criteria, I still point buyers to IPC-A-610 for soldered connections and IPC/WHMA-A-620 for wire-harness assembly. If a connector vendor can’t speak to those standards, treat the quote as incomplete.
Engineering Support: The Hidden Difference
When we had to replace an obsolete precision resistor, the support chain through Vishay Intertechnology Asia and our authorized distributor came back in two days with a drop-in answer. The multi-vendor route took five days and wanted a 5,000-piece minimum because the part was “custom.” From a cost standpoint, it wasn’t even close.
I’m not saying broad-line suppliers are always faster. I’m saying their support is already included in the BOM cost. With niche vendors, support often appears after the quote as a separate line item.
Supply Continuity: Multi-Vendor Looks Safer Than It Is
If you asked me three years ago, I’d have said multi-vendor sourcing was safer. After living through allocation periods, my view has changed.
Smaller vendors often have smaller inventory buffers. When a shortage hit, our multi-vendor strategy meant six different stock-out emails instead of one. Consolidating a larger share of the passive BOM with an authorized Vishay channel gave us better allocation information and fewer surprises.
The exception? Connectors again.
- Commodity USB, header, and board-to-board connectors: bundle these.
- Specialty high-power or IP-rated connectors: source them early, and don’t wait for a broad-line supplier.
Obsolescence Is Where Sourcing Strategy Gets Real
No one notices a sourcing strategy until a part gets discontinued. In 2024, we had a resistor EOL notice that affected three active boards. The information came from our distributor’s Vishay channel before it showed up in public databases. That early warning let us buy a last-buy quantity and qualify a replacement in parallel.
With a multi-vendor supply chain, EOL notices arrive in different formats, from different people, at different times. It’s another hidden cost that doesn’t show up on a quote.
That said, even Vishay can’t prevent every shortage. I’m not looking for a supplier who never has a problem. I’m looking for one who gives me enough warning to fix it.
What I’d Choose Now
It took me about 7 years and 3,000 line items to land on a clear view. I don’t think it’s “Vishay versus specialists.” It’s “Vishay for the passive spine, specialists for connectors and custom items.”
Here’s the practical checklist:
- If your BOM has 50+ passive SKUs, start with one qualified Vishay channel and see how much of the passive line it can cover.
- Separate connectors into two lists: standard and specialty. Quote them differently.
- For products where the internals are visible—a clear phone, an open-frame industrial device—approve connectors with Mechanical and Industrial Design before the BOM locks.
- Remember that unit price is not cost. Run a total cost calculation with freight, inspections, P.O. processing, and rework risk.
And for the original question: what are connectors used for? They are used to make your product buildable, testable, reliable, and repairable. If you buy them like they’re just wires, you’re overpaying somewhere else.
The cheapest quote is just the first page of the cost story. The last page is the number that matters.
